We may be long past Christmas, but the travel gifts are still rolling in.  Last night (and this morning) news broke of an awesome deal from Washington, D.C. to Guatemala on Copa Airlines for under $150! When deals like this pop up, you buy now and ask questions later, so needless to say I know dozens of people that will be exploring the streets of Guatemala City this year, which led to tons of messages like this in my inbox:

“Dani! I’m going to Guatemala, tell me where I’m staying.”

Ok fine, Hotel Whisperer to the rescue!  Here are my top three luxury hotel picks for you to indulge in with all that extra cash you just saved.

Vista Real

This property is stunning and gives you a traditional feel for Guatemalan culture.  From elegant colonial architecture to breathtaking outdoor gardens, Vista Real will make you feel like royalty. With rooms starting around $119/night, the property boasts free wifi, a gym, heavenly spa, butler service, swimming pool and more.  Another great plus is that the hotel is only 15 minutes from downtown Guatemala City, giving you easy access to all the historic sites.

La Reunion

Located in the city of Antigua, La Reunion is built on a historic coffee plantation with 4 stunning volcanoes serving as its backdrop.  An ode to Guatemala’s Mayan heritage, the landscape embodies the 4 elements and the architecture pays tribute to the Colonial era of Guatemala. 26 magnificent suites offer stunning views of the golf course, volcanoes, a private pool and Jacuzzi, with fine linens and luxurious Molton Brown toiletries.  When you’re done exploring the local area, come back to the hotel to dine at El Mirador Restaurant, named after one of the largest Mayan Archeological Sites in the Mayan World, grab a drink at Sky Bar or relax your mind at the spa with a hot stone massage.

El Convento

This boutique hotel is also in the city of Antigua, but unlike La Reunion, El Convento is located along the cobblestone streets of the city, across from the legendary Capuchinas Convent, in the heart of Antigua. Spacious rooms that start around $190, great amenities, thoughtful staff, delicious food, outdoor terraces with wonderful views, spa services and more, will make you feel right at home.  Plus, you can’t beat El Convento’s easy access to incredible churches and ruins, including San Jose Cathedral, La Merced, and La Recolecciòn.

  1. Thanks for the recommendations. I have been thinking about exploring Antiguas over MLK weekend but haven’t chosen a hotel yet – I’ll check these places out.
