I’ve been blessed to travel and experience some of the most luxurious hotels, resorts and spas in the world. Oddly enough, I’ve done very little of that here in my own backyard a.k.a the United States. Finding a luxe getaway at a big brand hotel is easy, especially living in New York, but that’s not what I’ve been searching for lately. That’s when my friend Christen reminded me of her stay at a tranquil, yet luxe resort that has become her place of solace.
Located about an hour outside of Washington, DC in Virginia’s wine and horse country is an oasis secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city. Salamander Resort & Spa is a 340 acre equestrian estate, founded by Sheila Johnson; entrepreneur, philanthropist and co-founder of Black Entertainment Television.
Salamander Resort is the perfect local escape and boasts 168 guest rooms including 17 suites, bathrooms with marble showers with body jets and pedestal tubs and private balconies and terraces with expansive countryside views.
If that’s not enough to relax you, head to the Salamander Spa where guests can enjoy 14 deluxe treatment rooms with either private outdoor treatment terraces or fireplaces, an exclusive Couple’s Suite with private terrace, whirlpool, steam shower and pedestal tub, a secluded spa courtyard with infinity edge pool, fire pit, whirlpool and private cabanas, and much more.
When you’re done luxuriating, head to the equestrian-inspired Harrimans Grill which features Virginia Piedmont-influenced cuisine, or to Gold Cup Wine Bar and Billiards Room, which serves an extensive wine list and menu of locally-inspired small plates throughout the day. Want to get a bit more hands on with your dining experience? Salamander’s state-of-the-art Cooking Studio features guest chefs and culinary classes, or grab a gourmet picnic basket at Market Salamander and dine on the resort grounds, in the nearby vineyards.
Guests can also enjoy a wide variety of activities on the resort including an Equestrian Center with 22 stalls, riding arena with ThorTurf footing, scenic trails, and traditional as well as unique equestrian programming, miles of walking and biking trails, a tennis court with outdoor pool complex, and tours of 50 Virginia wineries within 60 minutes of the resort.
After spending hours drooling over every single inch of the site, it looks like Salamander Resort & Spa is exactly the getaway I’ve been looking for. An escape that doesn’t force me to sacrifice time or luxury is just what my soul needs, and with summer coming, I’m adding Salamander to my travel wish list sooner rather than later. Don’t worry, when I get there I’ll be back with every last jealousy inducing detail!
